At a Beijing international hospital you will enjoy a similar standard of healthcare to what you are accustomed to back home.
Beijing expats have access to several international clinics in expat dense districts around the city. As well, there are a few larger international hospitals, mostly in the suburbs. International hospitals and clinics in China were originally established to service the expat community, but now also serve locals willing to pay higher fees for more personal care.
These establishments are an excellent choice if you have comprehensive medical insurance or a higher budget for your healthcare needs.
Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of using a Beijing international hospital compared to a public Beijing hospital.
For information about hospitals for foreigners in Shanghai please see our sister site’s Shanghai International Hospital article.

Western Healthcare Standards
Many of Beijing’s international hospitals and clinics follow international healthcare standards. Some of them are accredited by international healthcare organizations such as the Joint Commission International (JCI).
At these facilities you can find expat doctors who speak English, German, French, Japanese and other foreign languages, as well as local doctors who have studied overseas and/or speak fluent English.
Most follow a family doctor system whereby you can request to meet the same doctor each visit. Your GP will become familiar with your family’s health background and keep detailed records of your consultations and treatments. This will give you the peace of mind that they have thoroughly analyzed your condition each visit and determined the best diagnosis. At a public Beijing hospital you would commonly see a different doctor each visit who might only have access to some basic records of your past visits, if any.
Booking a Doctor’s Appointment in Beijing
Booking a doctor’s appointment at a Beijing international hospital or clinic is very easy through multiple channels including websites, official WeChat accounts and directly on the phone.
You can book your appointments in English through most of these channels. We include the contact information for these facilities in the international hospital list below.
Medical Insurance in Beijing
International hospitals and clinics in Beijing accept many medical insurance policies for direct billing so you don’t need to pay upfront. Even when they can’t process direct billing with your insurance provider, you can usually get reimbursed later based on medical reports and receipts provided by the hospital.
You must, however, first make sure of what your medical insurance policy covers and if you can be reimbursed for the services at these hospitals or clinics before you use any of their services; especially as their fees are quite high.
Many policies only cover inpatient care, so will not cover outpatient consultations and procedures. Be sure to talk to your insurance provider about these issues before you need to use any medical services in Beijing.
Services of International Hospitals and Clinics in Beijing
The international clinics in Beijing offer outpatient services and only minor medical procedures onsite, but often cooperate with local public hospitals where they can arrange for bigger medical procedures. When they send you to their partner hospital often they can still take care of the billing directly with you or your medical insurance provider and facilitate the check-in and other procedures.
A more comprehensive Beijing international hospital can provide a much larger range of medical procedures at their own site. Sometimes they will need to bring in a surgeon from overseas or a very experienced local physician from one of the large public hospitals in Beijing for complicated surgeries at their site.
Apart from common medical services, international hospitals in Beijing also offer:
- Pre-natal and Maternity services
- Vaccinations for China including for newborns
- Flu shots for the winter season
- Eye care
- Dentistry
- Ambulance and 24-hour emergency services
- Mental healthcare
- Testing for STDs
- Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy services
- Health check-up packages
Not all clinics or hospitals, however, offer all services. So it is a good idea when you first arrive in Beijing to check out a few locations to see what services they can provide.
Covid Test at a Beijing International Hospital or Clinic
Apart from the Fever Clinics at public Beijing hospitals, several international hospitals and clinics have also offered COVID-19 tests for expats in Beijing. These include United Family Hospital and International Medical Center (IMC).
However, they might not continuously offer such tests. So be sure to call first to ask if they can arrange the nucleic acid test for COVID-19.
If you don’t have any symptoms, but need proof of a negative test, there are also some Health Check-up centers where you can go to get tested for COVID-19 in Beijing.
Advantages of a Beijing International Hospital
As mentioned above, there are many advantages to using the international hospitals and clinics in Beijing including:
- In-depth consultations: You will have much longer consultations with your doctor than the typical 10-minute consultations in public hospitals.
- Privacy: Unlike public Beijing hospitals there won’t be other patients barging into the room during your consultation.
- Less crowded, cleaner and quieter facilities: Unlike the crowded Beijing hospitals the international clinics and hospitals are less crowded and much more comfortable.
- More personal service: Doctors at these facilities will keep detailed patient records to help them make better diagnosis and prioritize preventative care.
- Hospitalization: You can often get a private room at a Beijing international hospital whereas in a public hospital you will normally share a room with up to 5 other patients. A private room, however, will cost more, so first make sure your insurance policy will cover it.
Disadvantages of a Beijing International Hospital
- Not Comprehensive: The international clinics in downtown Beijing can service your general healthcare needs, but you will need to go to one of the international hospitals farther away or a public hospital for more serious or rare medical issues.
- Expensive: The consultation fees as well as tests and medical procedures are several times more expensive than what you would pay in the main section of a public Beijing hospital.
Typical consultation fees for a public hospital in Beijing range from US$6 to US$15, whereas the international hospitals and clinics charge between US$100 and $200 (and even higher for specialist doctors).
Medical tests and procedures will cost 2-20 times more than at a public Beijing hospital.
The fees charged by the VIP wards of public hospitals are more in line with those of the international hospitals and clinics. We list the consultation fee for a Beijing international hospital or clinic below. - HCP: Some Beijing international hospitals and clinics are labeled as ‘high cost providers’ (HCP) by medical insurance companies. Insurance policies covering all the services and fees at an HCP provider are much more expensive. Otherwise, you can choose a cheaper policy where you will need to co-pay a portion of the bill, typically around 15%. So check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage.
